We all know the importance of exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it can be difficult to stay active during the hottest part of summer! You may find yourself putting off your workouts and waiting for things to cool down—only to realize later that you may be waiting until November. It’s possible to get some outdoor activity in, do a workout, or run even with the high temperatures! And to encourage everyone to stay active, here are our top 5 tips at ORTHOKnox for beating that summer heat!
- Water Is Your Best Workout Buddy
Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to stay hydrated. If you are planning on exercising outside for more than 1 hour, consider a sports drink to replenish potassium, sodium, and electrolytes.
- Wear Sunscreen
SPF 50+ is recommended if you will be in the sun for more than 15 minutes. Waterproof sunscreen is always a good idea, even if you won’t be in the water. You will hopefully work up a sweat from your workout (and the heat).
- Time It Right
You’ve probably noticed that the heat becomes almost unbearable from 10 to 3 PM. The sun is at its highest and hottest. If possible, try to schedule your run for early morning or late evening to avoid the extreme heat. Try to find some shade, too, if you can!
- Brighten It Up
Brighter clothes reflect more sun and are summery anyway! Sweat-wicking material is preferable, but cotton works, too.
- Again, Water Is Your Friend
Swimming in the pool is great exercise and perfect for the summer! You can also get your sprinklers going during your workout or even run in the rain! But do avoid thunderstorms and slippery trails!
Don’t let the heat discourage you, but be safe while you are exercising! You can always try exercising indoors or in intervals.
