Often times we are asked do I need to see my doctor so I can receive physical therapy? The simple answer to the question is no, a referral from your doctor is not always required for you to have physical therapy. In Tennessee you are able to seek treatment from a physical therapist without a MD referral under direct access. Direct access to physical therapy is beneficial in that it allows you to receive treatment to address your needs faster and can save you money. As long as the physical therapist informs your physician within 5 days of initial evaluation. If your symptoms have not improved after 6 visits or 15 business days (whichever occurs first) physical therapy interventions must stop, a consultation must be done with your doctor, and referral made by your doctor for you to continue physical therapy. Some insurances may have exceptions to this, for example, Medicare requires all patients to have referrals from a physician for physical therapy treatment. This is where it is always important to be familiar with your insurance, but we are always happy to check for you!
