The nice weather has arrived with springtime and most of us are working on our “To Do” list, especially now that more time is available with being quarantined during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Yard work and garage spring cleaning are common tasks I’ve seen people doing, myself included. As I lifted multiple bags of mulch to and from the car, I couldn’t help but think how improper lifting techniques could potentially injure many others who are also completing their “To Do” list. So, keep the following in mind as you are lifting:
- Place your feet at least shoulder width apart making a wide and stable base of support
- Tighten your stomach muscles
- Bend at your knees
- Push through your legs to come back to standing
- Keep the load close to your body
- Minimize rotational movement, if you need to turn do so by stepping
- Ask for help
