Stem Cell Therapy
Stem Cell Injections
What are adult stem cells?
Stem cells have the exceptional ability to continuously divide, replicate, and produce new tissues. Adult stem cells, as opposed to fetal stem cells, have their origin in adult tissues. These cells are located throughout your body and help maintain health by repairing and replacing old and damaged tissues.
Some adult stem cells produce one specific type of tissue. These are especially important in tissues that continuously and frequently lose cells, such as your skin and blood.
Other types of adult stem cells can differentiate and produce several types of tissues. One such group of adult stem cells called mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are relied on in orthopedic stem cell injections.
What are the benefits of mesenchymal stem cells?
MSCs are effective for orthopedic conditions because they can:
- Replicate to produce cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones
- Reduce inflammation
- Relieve pain
- Promote cell growth
- Increase blood vessel growth
MSCs also secrete growth factors that promote wound repair and trigger collagen production.
Stem Cell for Knees and More
The regenerative qualities of stem cells may help heal conditions such as:
- Rotator cuff tears
- ACL tears
- Meniscus injuries
- Tendonitis and tendon injuries
- Ligament injuries
- Tennis elbow
Stem cell injections offer a regenerative treatment option for many types of sports injuries, degenerative conditions, and other problems affecting your musculoskeletal system.
How are stem cell injections prepared?
The first step in preparing the injection is to harvest the cells. This is accomplished through a procedure done in the office at ORTHOKnox. The procedure, called a bone marrow aspiration, uses a needle to withdraw a bone marrow sample from the bone of the pelvis. , This sample is then processed in the lab to separate and concentrate the desired cells for injection.
Stem cell injections can be used alone or combined with PRP, which is also produced in the office from your own blood. The platelets in PRP contain growth factors that increase stem cell effectiveness and further reduce pain and inflammation.
